While working on music I’m inspired by a myriad of occurrences. I often find inspiration in both positive and negative circumstances no matter how great or small. Since I was a kid I’ve always had an appreciation for paintings and works of art. As of late my palate for fine art has expanded. I find it very liberating to visit art museums and galleries alone to take what I see in. During post production of Miracle Year I decided that I’d like for the music to be accompanied by something but I was uncertain of exactly what. I knew I wanted some type of visual aid but I was unsure if it should be pictures, a painting or a video. I eventually decided that I wanted to go with some abstract artwork. About a year ago I was apart of a project named Ten X Ten (the X stands for by) with Animate Objects (another band I’m in). The project coupled musicians with visual artist to create works that were inspired by each other. We got the chance to work with Liz Born an eccentric painter and printmaker. I was really inspired by her work and asked if she’d be interested in working with me to create something for Miracle Year. She was interested so we set our first meeting and I played some of the music for her. After the meeting we corresponded via email and came to the agreement that we would both work on the art. With both of us putting our spin on it we were sure to make something unique. This was my first attempt at preparing a piece of visual art that someone would see besides myself and whomever takes a gander through my notebook. If you look at the images individually and listen to the song it corresponds with I’d hope you’d agree with how we visualized it. But, I’m okay with it if you don’t. Ether is very mellifluous, it is as smooth as a glass of Glenfiddich. When I listen to the song I visualize a lounge on the outskirts of Pluto, so we went for a space lounge vibe. My favorite part of this sketch is the penguin sitting at the bar. Star is a song about the journey into the unknown, also known as relationships. The song starts with a nice groove and vocals from r&b crooner Russoul. It ends with Shaun Johnson bellowing on the trumpet over the darkest section of the tune. If you look at the sketch closely there is what I visualize as a little girl staring into space with much optimism about whats to come. Behind her are skeletons and the darkness that she has left. Miracle Year is a song of transformation. It is about creating an idea. Destructing that idea and rebuilding that same idea on a stronger foundation. Again these are just my thoughts and I’m sure you hear and see the music differently. Please feel free to respond to this post here on this page, via email or on twitter.
